East Herts Council is preparing a new Local Plan which will help shape how the district grows and develops over the coming years, whilst protecting and enhancing its distinctive character, environment and communities.
As part of this work, we are seeking the views and experiences of people who live, work or operate within rural areas across the district. The information gathered through this survey will help us better understand the opportunities, challenges and priorities facing the rural economy and rural communities and will inform the evidence base that supports the emerging Local Plan.
East Herts is predominantly rural, with over 100 villages and hamlets. Agricultural land constitutes 82% of the district’s land area (ALC, Natural England 2024). Rural communities play an important role in supporting local businesses, farming, food production, employment, biodiversity, heritage and community life. We are keen to understand how these areas are changing and the issues and opportunities that should be addressed through future planning policies.
We would particularly welcome your views on:
Rural business and employment
Farming, food production and land management
Infrastructure and connectivity
Housing and affordability
Community wellbeing and inclusion
Future opportunities and priorities
This survey is intended for people who live and/or work in rural areas of East Herts, or who have relevant knowledge or experience of rural communities and businesses within the district.
The survey should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.
